Application Development on AWS

We have been developing and deploying cutting-edge custom solutions and software applications on AWS since 2007, very early in the history of AWS. Solution Street was instrumental in the design and development of ePropertyPlus, a low cost, AWS-based, SaaS application designed for municipalities to effectively manage community revitalization. Running on the AWS cloud-based infrastructure utilizing Amazon EC2 servers on Linux operating systems, ePropertyPlus uses Java/JEE technologies backed by Amazon RDS for MySQL and Amazon S3 for robust and scalable data persistence. AWS recognized ePropertyPlus in 2014 with the City on a Cloud Partners in Innovation Challenge Award, recognizing applications that solve local government challenges.

Big Data and Data Analytics

AWS not only provides a robust on-demand infrastructure, but also the ability to rapidly scale this infrastructure to handle even the largest Big Data and Data Analytics workloads. We have helped many customers develop Big Data and Data Analytics solutions on AWS, including a recent project to discover and visualize complex relationships relating to monetary usage across a very large corpus of unstructured data and documents. We recommended AWS on this project due to the number of applicable services already available on AWS for this type of workload as well as the reliability and scalability of the AWS infrastructure. Because there were many different and complex data sources to ingest, we needed to perform many Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) steps at different intervals in the pipeline. The AWS Data Pipeline combined with Elastic Load Balancing (ELB), Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) and Amazon EC2 was the perfect fit for this project allowing for ease of deployment, operations, and monitoring.

Serverless Computing

Serverless architectures are rapidly becoming more common as they help to address common issues found with more traditional architectures including ease of deployment, lower cost, better scalability, and improved flexibility. In one recent project, we rapidly designed and developed a serverless solution that leveraged AWS Lambda to define on-demand, event-driven functionality that returns customer account status and last payment information to call center software in a low cost, scalable manner able to meet the high volume requirements of the customer.

On another project, we designed and developed a data aggregation and normalization pipeline of Cyber Security related data built with AWS Lambda functions and Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) queues written in Python. The data pipeline was largely designed using a microservices architecture using AWS API Gateway and driven by AWS Lambda which are invoked via Amazon CloudWatch Events, Amazon Simple Queue Service (SQS) triggers, and Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS) messages. This solution is currently in production and has been proven to be fault tolerant, highly available and scalable to meet the mission critical needs of the customer at a fraction of the cost of a server-based architecture.
