Employment

I've never worked for a software consulting company before, can you share what that means?

As a Solution Street consultant, we help our clients achieve success in their business through software development.

All of our employees are consultants who use their knowledge and expertise to create, maintain, and manage software that optimizes the client's business processes.

What is company culture like at Solution Street?

We foster a flexible and supportive environment, where empathy is at the heart of how we work with both our employees and clients.

What sets us apart is that our leadership team, including our CEO and Founder are all experienced software developers, so they truly understand the challenges and opportunities in the field.

If you are looking for a place that truly values Honesty, Transparency, Dependability, Respect, and Fun (our core values), then we are the place for you!

Are your roles remote-friendly?

Yes! The majority of our roles are remote-friendly. However, we have in-person opportunities as well. We ask that our employees come in person for semi-annual company meetings at our office in Herndon, VA

Occasionally, we have opportunities to travel to different client sites for meetings as well

What happens when one project ends? Is there bench time?

Our goal as a company is to build healthy long-term relationships with our clients. This allows our team to be top-of-mind for future projects. Should you be on a project that ends, we leverage these client relationships to fin new opportunities that align with your skill set.

In the rare cases when there is not an immediate next project available, our leadership team will discuss specific bench time allotments and offer you different internal opportunities as they search for your next project, with decisions influenced by the individual's performance and other contributing factors.

What is the difference between being a Subcontractor and being an Employee with Solution Street?

Solution Street hires both W2 employees and 1099 contractors. A number of factors go into our decision on this hiring type.

  • Preference of the candidate
  • Length of the first project assignment with Solution Street
  • Location of candidate

We are currently set up to hire W2 employees from a limited number of states. These states currently include DC, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, New York, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. If you reside outside of one of these states, we can only consider you for 1099 subcontracting.

W2 employees are eligible for all company benefits and are paid through the company payroll system.

1099 subcontractors are not eligible for company benefits and will need to look outside of Solution Street for healthcare, disability insurance, etc. They are also required to file and pay taxes on their own. Solution Street pays subcontractors monthly via ACH deposit for their gross earnings which equals your hourly rate multiplied by the number of hours worked in the month.

During the interview process, we will ask you for your desired salary as an employee or your desired hourly rate as a 1099 subcontractor.

Interviews

What type of technical exercises are given in the Technical Interview and Face-to-Face interview?

During the technical portions of the interviews, you will analyze a problem and implement a solution using the programming language of your choice.

The exercises are collaborative, and we will help guide you along the way. No need to prepare, memorize, or recall anything beyond your strongest programming language syntax.

We are not interested in how fast you can solve the problem. As consultants, we feel great communication is as important as coding ability, therefore, we are interested in hearing your thought process as you try to solve the coding problem.

What will be discussed in the Face-to-Face interview?

We will begin with introductions, followed by a discussion about your previous experiences with technologies and the skills you've gained in past roles.

We will also cover a set of questions that match what a typical person would need to know for this role.

Then, we will move into some technical exercises.

At the end, you'll have time to ask any questions you may have.

How can I prepare for a client interview?

After your Face-to-Face interview, a team member will reach out to you should we have a role that would work well with your skill set. Our team will discuss this role and the client interview process with you in more detail before submitting you to the client. The client interview is on an as-needed basis but most of our customers DO request an interview with our candidates.

If both parties are ok to move forward, we will share your resume with our client and we will likely be able to schedule a meeting with them.

Due to the nature of consulting, and the variety of client projects we have, "what to expect" from a client interview will vary. Some client interviews are "getting to know you" type of conversations and others are more technical.

I have interviewed with the client / Solution Street, but there was not a role that was a good fit for me. Will I still be considered for future roles?

At Solution Street, we enjoy making long-term connections with great candidates. Though we may not have a role that fits your skill set at the moment, that does not stop us from keeping you in mind for better-suited roles in the future. Our leadership team is always looking for new client projects and when we feel there is a better fit, we will reach back out!

Clients

Who is the client for the role I applied for?

Due to the variety of roles available at Solution Street, no set client is identified during your application process.

Our interview process helps our team better understand which of those available roles is the best fit for your skill set. We want your first project as a Solution Street consultant to be comfortable for you and a good match to the skill sets you bring to the table!

Once we have determined there is a good matching role, our team will discuss this role and the client with you in more detail.
